I (May 28-June 11) Actually, it was rather a silly commercial. First of all, so few people are interested in shaving sandpaper as it does seem like a rather futile occu- pation. It probably can be as- sumed that the average viewer reaction was "so what?" However, the Federal Trade Commission, for some unknown reason, became quite interest. ed in this particular commer- cial and discovered that in- stead of sandpaper being shaved, the demonstration was "faked" with the use of plext- glass. While apparently a shav- ing cream will eventually soft- en up sandpaper, in the limited time of a commercial, it can- not act that fast, hence the use of a substitute "prop." The original FTC examiner found that it was not too im- portant, but the full FTC com- mission over-ruled him and is- sued orders for the commercial to stop. It was appealed to the courts, and they in turn over- Nstlonal Federation of Independent Brlse$ stopping the daily violations of the Robinson-Patman Act which is a safeguard against ruinous competition by monop- olistic practices. nknown, of course, is how much damages were suffered hy independent business while FTC shaved sandpaper. Thus, if it is true that Nero fiddled while Rome burned, it can perhaps also be said that the FTC shaved sandpaper while many were ruined by the practice of monopoly. Interestingly enough, it was never estahllshed if anybody actually bought the prodRct because he was deluded into thinking it would, shave ud- paper. Neither has FTO made It known, for benefit of those who may want to shave Band- paper, the best way to go about It. Perhaps sandpaper shavers should unite in a sit-in dent- onstration at atil they do reveal this informati0 0000;iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiSc,00 Exercise Is No Panacea By DONALD L. DICKERSON, M.D. Executive Editor, Western Medicine It is fashionable to blame every human ill from muscle spasms to heart failure on the modern sedentary life---on lack of exercise. By this reasoning our energetic forefathers, unencumbered by mechanization or whlte-collar deskbound occupationi, should have had few ailments to worry them. This is not true of course. Nineteenth eentury farmers and industrial workers lived short lives and had their full share of disabilities. And there is evidence that the minority who today do heavy physical labor suffer many of the same ills as the button puncher and the pencil pusher. _ A recent medical report now challenges the widely held no- tion concerning an ailment at- tributable to the sedentary life. Half Not Sitters h The report found that roughly alf of those treated for hemorr- hoids were not sitters but worked at physically active occupations. Until this study was made physi. clans as well as laymen believed there was a relationshi between hemorrhoids and physical /nae- tivitYlJublie -health statistics tell us that between 50 and 75 per cent of U.S. adults are suffering or have suffered from perineal disorders, hemorrhoids being but one of many. These figures in. elude the physically active and the physically inactive. Furthermore, there is doeu. mentation that perineal dis0rd- ere are as old as history. Long before the Christian era EgTpo tian priests, doubling as physi- ians, were prescribing sitzbath and suppositories. Cardinat Richelieu and Copernicus were • tJns of palnfuIanal lesions: Charles Dickens and Louie XIV ef France had anal fistulas; Na- lmleon had hemorrhoids. Just how widespread the prob- lem was in the past is somewhat obscure. Undoubtedly false mod- esty was a great obstacle to deo ,action and proper care then, as it is today, There are sigm today that this obstructive prudery is giving way to acceptance o| routine anoreetal examina- tions and spe¢ia| hygiene. This is due largely to the ef- forts of the American Cancer Society. One/ndication that the prob- lem is beginning to receive the recognition it deserves is the ap- pearance for the first time in drug stores of an agent for daily perlneal hygiene. It is an sara. sol foam, called AnuI1. It is anti. bacterial, antifungal, healing, and deodorant, and is applied with toilet tissue or cotton, Lift the Curtain In fighting any disease, pub- lic health specialists subscribe to a basic first rule--lift the cur- tain on the true facts. In the case of anorectal disorders, this would include exposing false notions concerning the therapeutic value of exercise as well as the danger- ous attitudes that lead to cn- cealment of the disorder in the hope that it will vanish of its own accord. Prophylaxls by daily anal ears and prompt medical attention to abnormal anal symptoms will n0t only promote better health but may well be tifesaving. ,.. MERRITT A. JOHNSON 515 First Street.
