OPINION Thursday, June 4, 2015 Letters continued from page 4 ing of issues that are pertinent to the pres- ent. Words such as cor- ruption, lack of mili- tary confidence and (of course) religion comes to mind. When the old "advisor" was asked what we needed to win, he simply pointed to the map and said," The Buddhists control the northern part of the ville and the Roman Catholics controlled the southern part of the ville." We were stuck in the middle fighting the VC at night and helping the "farmers" in the daytime. We never saw the old "advisor" again after the TET. Sound familiar to the present situations we find our- selves in Iraq? Graeme Webster Cheney Write to the Point continued from page 4 of the highest property taxes in Spokane County, teachers decided to not walk out. Perhaps in West Val- ley there was the linger- ing memory of 1999, the last time we faced "rolling walkouts" in protest to state funding cuts. Coincidentally, later that year the dis- trict failed to pass a levy vote for the first time in years and years and years. West Valley, along with Central Valley, were among many of the 295 districts in the state that appear to be taking other mea- sures to show displea- sure and not be among the 63 that did opt for • closed classrooms. Mead teachers will do their walkout on the last day of school, after students have left. I am all in for prop- erly funding schools if money gets put to good use. I have backed that support with a 44-year record that, to my recol- lection, has never had the "no" box checked on my ballot. Part of that alle- giance comes from hav- ing had a mother who taught for 32 years, a wife who put in 37 years and a daughter in her eighth year in the classroom. All have been those true dedi- cated difference-mak- ers and life-changers" for their students. This while having scoped out the number of $100,000 per year salaries in admin quar- ters across the state and wondering how they'd answer my questions on what part they play in questionable test scores and graduation rates. Then, when I research stories about higher ed- ucation and learn of the immense need for reme- dial education for incoming freshmen, I wonder what is it that the $10,000 a year per pupil we spend- give or take a few hundred dollars here or there -- is getting? Seems to me that rath- er than irritate untold numbers of parents and voters across the sate who have been affected by the strike, might there have been other ways to make the funding needs argument? Continually throwing more money at a problem, be it an old car or today's schools, is not necessarily the answer. Paul Delaney Can be reached at pdelaney@cheneyfreepress. comm.
