That's the advice of a grain market- ing specialist at Washington State University. Dr Robert L. Sargent, WSU exten- sion economist, foresees modest price increases for soft white wheat-the mainstay of' the Pacific Northwest--at least until November. "World wheat production is projected to be down slightly from last year," Sargent said. "This may temper the wheat price slide that would otherwise be expected by record or near record U.S. feed and food grain production." While the total U.S. wheat crop is expected to fall just short of last year's record production, total production of soft white wheat is expected to fall 67 million bushels short of last year. He added that although the 1981-1982 carry- over of 109 million bushels was higher than the 93 million bushel total of the previous marketing year, total U.S. wheat supplies will be down about 50 million bushels. He said there is evidence the Austra- lian crop will be down sharply from last year as well. "Since the Australians compete for the same markets as growers in the Northwest, this suggests price strength for Northwest soft white wheat as the season progresses" He expects prices to rise 20 cents to 40 cents a bushel over current levels into November. Prices have fluctuated be- tween $3.97 and $4.16 a bushel in Portland the past week. Whether they continue to rise beyond November will depend primarily on the ultimate size of the Australian crop, the extent to which the world recession continues, the dampening effect of lower feed grain prices and prices of other classes of wheat and interest rate movements, he said. Sargenrs advice to feed grain grow- ers is to sell soon because most feed grain production is projected to set a new record this year. "Extended holding is not likely to pay . off unless current crop projections are off very significantly," the economist said. Total U.S. corn production is expect- ed to exceed 8.3 billion bushels this year, 114 million bushels above last year. Total barley production is expect- ed to top 508 million bushels, about 30 million bushels more than last year. Corn comprises about 80 percent of feed grain production in the United States.
