Page 8 Cheney Free Press Thursday, September 2, 1982 Cardinal practice Medical Lake's Cardinals have been hitting the practice equipment hard and heavy in preparation for their upcoming football season. Coaches John Giannandrea, Larry Petersen, Larry Hutchison, Glen Payne, George Lang and David Olzendam have been putting the team through their paces as the season starting date closes in. The Cardinals' first game is away at Riverside on Sept. 10 with a home game against long-time rivals, the Cheney Blackhawks, scheduled for Sept. 17. Eagle defense dominates game Eastern Washington University, faced with an opening game assign- ment against Big Sky Conference title contender Weber State, has moved into its second week of fall football practice. Coach Dick Zornes will sent his squad of more than 80 players through ano- ther full week of two-a-day workouts with two-hour sessions scheduled at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Defense dominated early stages of the first serious fall scrimmage last Saturday before three different quar- terbacks, freed from confrontation with the first defensive unit, tossed scoring passes. The aerial game dominated the one-hour afternoon scrimmage on Woodward Stadium vacated earlier in the week by the professional Seattle Seahawks. Tile first defense, even though it was operating without two starters and with two others available for only limited duty, intercepled three passes in the first 15 minutes of action. All the scoring was accomplished at the ex- pense of mixed defensive units, mostly second and third-string combinations. Junior letterman Jim McElwain hurled a 10-yard scoring pass to reserve tight end Torn Clark. Junior transfer Steve Hunt, the offensive player of the year in the state junior college circuit last fall, hit freshman tight end Bill Altena with an eight-yard toss to climax a 70-yard drive and senior Jim Brittain took the offense on a seven-play, 70-yard charge which he capped with a 13-yard pass to freshman tailback Carlton Ilenderson. Brittain is expected to be the starter after being redshirted last fall, when he appeared in only one game, with a knee injury. The former Columbia Basin College star has played his entire college career for Zornes and he shared starting duties with Dan Daly in 1980. The first defensive line, featuring two-year lettermen Bryan Branden- burg, I,arry Rencken and Chet Bridger, with University of Utah transfer Willie Johnson, kept the quarterbacks under strong pressure while it played to- gether. First-unit strongside linebacker Jeff Metter, a USC transfer from San Mateo, CA, and veteran free safety Greg Kramer were starters who sat out the scrimmage. Veteran middle line- backer Jim Matter and two-year start- er Mark Puyear, the strong safety, saw limited action. Middle linebacker was a source of defensive problems in the workout only because transfer Tom Kinney, a junior college All-American for Spokane Falls Community College last season, sprain- ed his left ankle Thursday. EWU, with a 7-3 seaons in 1981, will launch its 1982 schedule Sept. ll in Ogden against Weber State, which will start its second season under offensive- minded head coach Mike Price.
