CHENEY FREE PRESS Thursday, September 10, 2015 NEWS By AL STOVER Staff Reporter On a crisp Sunday morning, Aug. 30, mem- bers from the Medical Lake Citizens Deer Advi- sory Committee conduct- ed a deer census around the city where they found 73 doe, 38 bucks and 34 fawns. This is an increase from the committee's April count where they found two bucks, 10 doe and 15 fawns. Unlike April's count, this census included data from Eastern State Hospi- tal and Lakeland Village in addition to the resi- dential areas of the city, according to Candace Bennett, wildlife conflict specialist with the Wash- ington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. "Even without the hos- pitals, the groups counted over 100 deer within the city," Bennett said. Bennett explained that Officials note that recent deer counts would be up even if Eastern State Hospital and Lakeland Village property had account. it is difficult to compare as buck-to-doe ratios. "They were separate from females, which is common as they are getting ready for mat- ing season." Bennett said some "One thing we noticed is that most of the bucks, unless they were year- lings, were by themselves or in large groups., Candace Bennet, wildlife conflict specialist, state Department of Fish and Wildlife committee members are concerned that hunting pressure could push more deer into the city limits. The committee is expected to reconvene sometime in the fall to determine if they want to continue the deer census, move onto a new project or disassemble. "I'm happy that peo- ple are still participat: ing," Bennett said. "It's almost been a year and there is still quite a tot of interest. Groups like this tend to slow down after the year, but people in Medical Lake are still interested. It's nice to see them engaged." AI Stover can be reached at al@cheneyfreepress. com.
