Eastern keeps eye on the 'Big Sky' From the Lewiston Morning Tribune By Paul Ramsdell Ron Raver has been a familiar face in the Big Sky Conference Football Kickoff gathering here this past July in Sun Valley, Idaho. He has been a frequent visitor at other Big Sky con- ventions. At this point, how- ever, he's not yet one of the boys. He's still an outsider looking in, hoping someday there will be a tournament reservation for him. Raver is the athletic direc- tor at Eastern Washington University at Cheney. His men's program at EWU is an independent NCAA Division II program except for base- ball which is a member of the expanded Northern Division of the Pacific-10 Conference. Raver is hoping down the " road that he can trade in his independence for a spot in the Big Sky Conference. "We are similar to many of the Big Sky schools in philo- sophy, sizes of the institution and in facilities," Raver said. The Eagles will play three Big Sky teams in football this season and may play as many as six next season including an opener at Idaho. "In this day and age of finances, location is very im- portant," Raver said. "Transportation, except for scholarships, is the single most costly aspect of an athletic program." There it works well for both EWU and the Big Sky schools to play each other with a minimum amount of travel cost. If EWU was in the Big Sky, the Eagles could bus to Idaho, Montana, Montana State, Boise State and Idaho State. EWU schedule with numer- ous Big Sky teams doesn't necessarily mean the Eagles are practicing before they enter the league. According to Ron Stephenson, the Big Sky commissioner, the con- ference has no desire to ex- pand. "I have not deduced, since being commissioner, any sen- timents toward expansion," Stephenson said. The Big Sky has a nice even eight teams right now, and the Big Sky Conference." according to Stephenson Without the Big Sky, there is no desire to go to a EWU's only chance to join a cumbersome nine team league would be either in league.
