Page 4 Section 2 Free Press Medical Lake soccer start slow, finish strong By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Slow starts but good finishes marked the start of the season for the Medical Lake soccer team last week. But in the end it made for a good start for the :lady Cardinals, who opened their 2009 Great ' .NorthemLeagueseason, beafing Riverside 4-2 and Colville 3-0. This past Thursday against the Lady Indians, Medical Lake took nearly the entire first half to break out of a defensive struggle. But a lot of that time, prior to Alyssa Nilles breakaway goal in the 35th minute, was also spent making sure Colville standout Tasha Luu didn't do damage. After Medical Lake coach Zane Higgins made a defensive adjustment, his team had to pay less at- tention to Luu, who seemed to be everywhere. "She was causing us a lot of problems and took the free kick," Higgins said. After the made adjustments that neutralized Luu and it changed the game, he said. Luu nearly put her team ahead at the 20th min- ute with a bee kick that looked like it hit the comer of the goal where the crossbar and post meet." From my perspective she just shot it and it hit the post," I-tiggins said. "I talked to Natalie (Pendell) after the game and she said she touched it. She ended up making a great save on it." 'We switched a couple of players around and moved Jenny (Smith) into a man-to-man role and that took Luu out ofthe game" Higgins said. "Once we took her out of the game it picked up our game. We scored the goal and got a little momentum with that,." Lindsey Campbell led the way against Colville scoring once and assisting on each of the other goals. Campbell beat two players with a dribble, "and then Alyssa Nilles breaks in on the way to scoring win over Colville. she laid it off for Alyssa (Niles)," who broke in alone for the first goal at the 35th minute. "lAndsey has been playing real consistent every single game," the coach said. Sam Kelly took a slick pass from Campbell and fired a shot home tom the top of the penalty area at the 53rd minute and then it was Campbell who finished things Off when she stole the ball in deep, broke in alone and chipped a shot over the keeper in the 70th minute. Campbell also had hree assists in the Lady Cards' opening win against Riverside. So far she leads the team in points with a goal and five as- sists. Last Tuesdaythe Lady Cards broke a 2-2 tie as Alyssa Nilles scored the game winner in the 54th Photo by Paul Deianey Medical Lake's first goal last Thursday in a 3-0 minute and Kelly followed three minutes later with an insurance tally to complete her hat trick. Kelly opened scoring in the fourth minute and again in the 17th minute. Three games into the season Higgins is praising his keeper, Natalie Pendell, who he said has "had two very strong outings in the early going." Kelly has paced the team with four goals, pick- ing up where she left off a year ago. "She's picked up her game; a lot of the girls have picked up their games," Higgins said. The Lady Cards beat Clarkston this past Tues- day, 3-2, and hit the road Thursday at Deer Park for a 4 p.nx game.
