Page2 Free Press Classes will culminate in a concert with the Spokane groups BY JAMES EIK Staff Reporter Kinderchor, a Spokane children's choral program, is extending its outreach into Cheney with a satellite pro- gram for kids. Jurene Phaneuf, a parent with daughters in Kinderchor, will be leading the group in Cheney. The satellite program lasts for nine weeks, beginning Oct. 11 and culminates in a concert with the full Spokane Kinderchor group Dec. 14. Classes take place Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. at Cheney Middle School The classes are for treble voices in the fifth through eighth grades. pand The program evolved from the South Hill Children's Chorus in 2007, under the persistent di- rection of Sharon Rodkey Smith. A Washington native, Smith has teaching experience in Tacoma and Omaha, Neb., and recently returned to the Spokane area to be near family. In Omaha, she was the founding director of Cantori, a choir that performed at state and divisional confer- ences, as well as regional and national tours. Having a welcoming en- vironment and a warm heart, Smith's guidance helped the program come to life in its early days. "Her heart is broad and she embraces virtually any child who desires to sing," Phaneuf said m an email. Witnessing first-hand Smith's abilities, students will be in good hands for the nine- week program in Cheney. "What amazes me, however, is the level of artistry Sharon is able to produce from the kids," she said. "They have consistently scored the highest possible grades in competi- tions, and have been praised by folks who recognize' musical quality." For Phaneuf, the choir has provided an outlet for her daughters, along with other area children. "A few years ago I was homeschooling our daughters and was sorry they didn't have the opportunity to sing in a chorus like I had enjoyed in public school as a child," she said. Phaneuf's daughters took part in the program after seeing a performance of the South Hill Children's Chorus. She and Smith saw the make-up of the choir and hoped to create one for younger children. "They have consis- tently scored the high- est possible grades in competitions, and have been praised by folks who recognize musical quality." Jurene Phaneuf, Parent with Kinderchor Spokane "During the concert we brain- stormed a list of friends and acquaintances who might be interested in forming a new choir for older girls," Phaneuf said. That next fall, the two wom- en were able to recruit 15 mid- dle and high school girls in the northern part of Spokane. Heartwarming stories from the choir are a regular sight. Included in the choir are blind students and voices with stut- rti in ters. The choir performed at the funeral of one of its members, who sadly lost their battle against brain cancer, demon- strating the close bond students have with each other in the organization. That bond will be among many of the elements included in the satellite course in Cheney. While the camaraderie in- side the group is strong, Pha- neuf recalls one competition where even the judges were visibly moved from a perfor- .mance. "The judge sprinted onto the stage and hugged Sharon before working with the choir," she said. "He told a group of parents afterward, "You don't understand. I hear choirs all day long and then to hear a group like this, it's a breath of fresh air.'" That same judge donated his time to work with the choir in Thursday, September 27, 2012 its annual retreat in the follow- ing year. Tuition for Kinderchor Spo- kane, the main program ranges from $100 to $140 per semester. Phaneuf said around half of the children enrolled request and receive tuition assistance. Kinderchor has around 60 voices in two choirs, one for younger children and one for older. As a non-profit organi- zation, donations to the choir are tax-deductible. A volun- teer board helps to oversee the choir's administrative dealings, but help is always accepted. For more information, or to enroll, Phaneuf is available at 509-294-1192.
