More sports EWU opens Saturday against Simon Fraser Encouraged by a narrow ex- hibition loss to Athletes in Action Canada, Joe Folda will begin his official career as interim men's basket- ball coach at Eastern Washington Uni- versity Saturday night when the Eagles host Simon Fraser. EWU and Simon Fraser, consistent rivals for the last decade, will meet in Reese Court at 7:30 p.m. Eastern holds an 11-4 edge in the rivalry, but the Eagles graduated all five of the starters, who helped lead them to a 19-8 record last winter. SFU will be feeling the 10ss of offensive superstar Mike Jackel, who averaged 28,9 points. Jackal scored 32 points as Simon Fraser nipped EWU, 78-77, last Dec. 11 in Burnaby, B.C. Eastern crushed the Clansmen in Cheney, 87-70, on Feb. 13 despite a 38-point salvo by Jackel. Don Garves scored 25 points for EWU in that win. EWU opened its season unofficially last Thursday, dropping an 87-83 deci- sion to AIA in a contest that was close from start to finish. Senior transfer John Bell (Portland) scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Eastern in the Reese Court exhibition. Super sub Matt Piper (Roy), also a forward, provided offensive support, scoring 15 points. AIA played without veteran guard star ttarry Sheehy, who had a sprained ankle, but the visitors received 20 points each from Marvin Delph and Paul Renfro. Alan Kristmanson, a 6'6" senior forward, is Simon Fraser's best known of-five threat. He averaged 12.4 points in 1982. Guards Rich Bruns and Mike Carkner are veterans. Forward Dave Mason, a member of the New Zealand national team, is the top newcomer. SFU won two of three games with British Columbia a week ago. Simon Fraser trimmed UBC, 79-61, Nov. 5, before the Thunderbirds came back with a 76-61 decision Nov. 6. Last Tuesday, Simon Fraser took the rubber game in the series, 73-58. EWU will follow up its official opener by hosting Carroll College Tuesday night, Nov. 24, also in Reese Court at 7:30 p.m. Carroll opens its season this weekend, visiting University of Leth- bridge and University of Calgary, Friday and Saturday nights. Eastern Washington has won its last six home openers. In addition to Bell, the group of players which saw the most playing timeagainst AIA included guards" Melvin Bradley ( Chicago and Dean Maye (Sml Francisco) along with forward Lincoln Burton (Othello) and center Tony Chrisman (Wallowa, Ore). Bradley, Burton and Chrisman are letterman returnees. Maye is a junior transfer with previous experience at San Francisco Community College and UC Santa Barbara. In the exhibition loss, Bradley contributed 12 points and four assists. Maya had seven assists, but did not score.
