Hagel and the five other award winners had some personal time with Gruwell. "I got to personally meet her, and she was super nice and very personable," Hagel said. Once finished with high school, Hagel plans to pursue a career as a prosecuting attorney at a four-year school. "I've applied to places in California, places back East, I applied to Gonzaga, Whitworth, WSU, everywhere around here," she said. "I'm just waiting to get some acceptance letters and then go and visit some of them and see which one is best for me." Although the other award winners are in lines of work different than Hagel's dream job, they were still able to offer her some advice about the future. The winner for the education category, Lisa Matteson- Coleman, a teacher at Havermale High School's On-Track Academy, said something that stuck with Hagel. "She told me you don't have to go away, don't feel like you have to move away," she said. "I could always stay here in the commu- nitv." The other award winners, Hagel said, are all inspiring. "They definitely inspired me to keep being involved in the com- munity," she said. "Everything they've done has been so awesome." While Hagel appreciates the award, and being recognized for her work she's undeterred. "I'm involved with the stuff I'm involved with to help others, but also learned that I can benefit from it too. I'll keep doing the extracur- riculars no matter what," she said.
