/ Thursday, December 23, 1982 Cheney Frec Press Page 3 Tax counselors sought for elderly taxpayers The Spokane effort of the nationwide Tax-Aide Program has begun recruit- ing volunteers to serve as tax counsel- ors tO older people for the 1983 tax season. The Tax-Aide Program, a community service of the National Retired Teachers Association and the Ameri- can Association of Retired Persons, provides free income tax advice to older taxpayers, according to Ross Huffaker, coordinator for the Spokane program. Huffaker said persons volunteering to serve as counselors should have a sincere interest in serving older adults and have a good knowledge of income tax matters. They also should be willing to participate in an Internal Revenue training course and agree to devote at least four hours a week to providing tax counseling. Volunteer counselors do not have to be members of either NRTA or AARP. Huffaker pointed out that volunteers should be older persons since a unique Tax-Aide feature is emphasis on peer- group assistance. .+++' +A , ,,,'+.# ..,,,,'++ 8 ' +\\;C9'+'%G Presents: IIII COKE, TAB, SPRITE, FRESCA or DIET COKE 2-LITER BOTTLES PEPSI, DIET PEPSI, PEPSI FREE, PEPSI LIGHT AND MOUNTAIN DEW \\; \\; \\; \\; 'Messiah' Sing-In I Although the turnout was slim, the en- thusiasm and sound during the annual "Messiah" Sing.ln in Cheney was great! Everyone in the community is invited to attend. Huffaker explained that the IRS does not consider volunteer tax counselors, such as those involved in Tax-Aide, as "professional return preparers." "Since our counselors don't charge a fee for their service," he said, "the IRS does not require them to sign returns and does not hold them responsible for underpayment of taxes on the returns they assist with." The IRS training course for volun- teers will be held in January. The local Tax-Aide program will offer assistance to older residents at convenient lo- cations Jan. 31 - April 15. "We've found that our counselors enjoy their activities so much that most of them come back year after year," Huffaker said. "But we can always use additional volunteers--especially this year, since we're trying to open more counseling sites and reach additional Spokane, Cheney and Deer Park older residents." Persons interested in finding out more about Tax-Aide or in serving as a counselor should call Huffaker at 455-6281.
